What’s HANKO?

A hanko (seal) is a vital communication tool that has long been used in Japan as a form of personal identification and to sign official documents and other paperwork. Without a hanko, a person’s marriage will not be approved and they cannot even buy a car.

Before stamping documents and paperwork with a hanko, ink must be applied to the hanko’s surface using a red ink pad. In an increasingly digitized society, this is one of the few traditional cultural practices that are still carried out by hand. It’s one of the stranger parts of Japanese culture.

CONCEPT

Exchanging business cards is not enough to make the other person remember your face. HANKOHAN was created as a new communication tool that will come in handy in situations like these. The machine digitizes your facial features and uses a unique algorithm to create a personalised HANKO with no two ever being the same. An image of your face will pop up when a person looks at the HANKO seal in an AR environment. This way, no one will ever forget your face again. HANKOHAN fuses the traditional Japanese culture of hanko with technology to create a new mode of communication.

How to make

  • Have your face scanned by the camera and enter your personal details.

  • The machine will use an algorithm to create a hanko with a unique design.

  • Use your completed hanko to stamp your seal.
The seal will act as an AR marker which will generate an image of your face.
